Our Training offer
We offer training for those already running continuously for 5k and beyond.
Monday – 7pm, Tumbles, Portobello
Monday sessions get the week off to a great start, rotating between steady runs, hills and speed sessions. They are led by a run leader and there are no pace groups but the hills and speed sessions are done at your own pace. No-one is left behind. Sessions generally last one hour.
Tuesday – 6.30pm, Royal Commonwealth Pool
Tuesdays are chatty, social sessions led by a run leader. We run steady in three pace groups (see below – pace will vary slightly depending on terrain, elevation and participants). We stick together and have stops to regroup so no-one is left behind, but we may ask you to switch groups if it would better suit your pace. Sessions generally last 1-1.5 hours and you’ll get to visit parts of the city you never knew existed. Routes vary from road to light trail in summer and may end in ice-cream if weather permits!
- Group 1 is suitable for those comfortable running 10k in 1 hour. Distance is around 10k. Running pace is generally around 6 min/km (9:30 min/ mile)
- Group 2 is suitable for those comfortable running 10k. Distance is around 7-10k. Running pace is generally around 6:30-7:30 min/km (10:30-12 min/ mile)
- Group 3 is suitable for those comfortable running a continuous 5km. Distance varies from 5-7km. Running pace is generally around 7:30 min/km (12 min/ mile).
Thursday – 6.30pm, Craigentinny Golf Course/Tumbles, Portobello
Thursday sessions focus on pacing and drills and are a great way to understand and improve your pace and to help with consistency and stamina. They are led by a run leader and are suitable for all paces and support is available to help you understand what pace to aim for in each session. You will be encouraged to work on both controlling and pushing your pace. Sessions generally last 1-1.5 hours.
Sunday – 9.30am, locations across the city
Sunday runs offer the chance for a daytime run and usually end at a cafe where we can continue the chat over coffee and a snack. The route is plotted in advance by our routemaster but the sessions are self-guided, not led. You should ensure you can safely navigate the route and complete the distance, alone if necessary. Pace groups may be available but can also be agreed by runners on the day depending on who attends. Groups can self-organise and there’s no need to keep everyone together. Sometimes longer routes are available as part of training plans for popular events, but members can also extend routes themselves if that suits their training.
